MP Global SoundStep XL is a 2 mm cross-linked foam underlayment with an attached vapor-control film. It is designed for compatible laminate and wood-floor systems, particularly where the installer wants some impact-noise reduction, support under a floating floor and moisture management in one layer.
The key distinction is that SoundStep XL is part of a flooring assembly, not a standalone soundproofing barrier. Its published impact and airborne sound ratings are measured with specific floors, subfloors and ceilings; those figures cannot be promised for an unrelated room.
Where SoundStep XL fits—and where it doesn’t
MP Global lists laminate, wood and bamboo among its intended floor types and describes both floating and selected glue-down installation methods. The manufacturer’s comparison chart distinguishes SoundStep XL from SoundStep LV, which is targeted at luxury vinyl systems.
Do not assume compatibility with sheet vinyl, carpet, ceramic tile or every luxury-vinyl plank. The published installation specification excludes ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, carpet and VCT. For any flooring with an attached pad, check the flooring manufacturer’s underlayment allowance and warranty before adding another layer.
What the acoustic test figures mean
SoundStep XL’s manufacturer publishes laboratory IIC and STC results for particular floor-ceiling assemblies and an improvement measurement (Delta IIC) for an identified test build. These are useful comparison signals, but they do not measure what this 2 mm roll would achieve by itself.
- IIC is concerned with impact-noise transmission through a tested floor-ceiling assembly.
- STC addresses airborne sound transmission through an assembly.
- Delta IIC compares impact performance when a specified flooring treatment is added to a specified base assembly.
Ask whether a published test matches your floor, slab or joist system, ceiling treatment and installation method. If the nuisance is voices or television passing between rooms, a thin foam underlayment alone is unlikely to resolve every transmission path.

The attached vapor film is useful, but it does not override moisture limits. MP Global’s specification warns that high-moisture concrete may require additional protection. Do not use the existence of a film as a reason to skip required moisture testing or subfloor preparation.
Before installing a roll
For a typical approved floating installation, the manufacturer’s instructions show the film side up, the seams butted together, and the supplied lip-and-tape feature sealing the joints. The flooring itself is then laid according to its own instructions. The documented double-glue-down method is different and calls for specific adhesives and rolling equipment.
Prepare a dry, suitably flat, clean and structurally sound subfloor. A thin foam layer can accommodate minor imperfections within the applicable installation limits; it cannot correct an uneven or damaged subfloor. If radiant heating is installed, check the combined floor, heat and underlay requirements.
Our recommendation
SoundStep XL is worth considering for a compatible laminate or wood-floor renovation where moisture management and reduced impact transmission are both relevant. It is a poor choice if the main problem is an unidentified noise path, the floor covering is excluded, or the manufacturer does not approve an extra underlayment layer.
