TotalMass MLV Review

Company and Product Background

Mass Loaded Vinyl, like TotalMass MLV, is a very effective material when it comes to soundproofing and echo absorption. As it is applied permanently (usually) under drywall or the outer coating, you need to be very careful while choosing a brand of MLV. Good quality MLV has enough density to stop all noise from all sides of your room, including doors and ceilings.

TotalMass is one of the more reliable companies that sell quality MLV. Being in the market since 2008, this Idaho-based firm doesn’t have much to offer other than your standard MLV, but what it sells is absolutely great.

Products Offered

TotalMass offers three kinds of MLV with different density based on your requirements.

They are :

  • 0.5  pounds per square feet MLV
  • 1 pound per square feet MLV
  • the hard 2 pounds per square feet MLV

Product Specifications

TotalMass MLV

The 2 pound MLV is the thickest at ¼” while the 1 pound variant comes at ⅛” and the 0.5 pounds is the thinnest with 1/16” thickness. The dimensions available for the 1 pound are 4’ x 10 and 4’ x 25’. For the 2 LB version, it’s just 4’ x 15’. The 1/2 LB comes at 4’ x 5’ rolls. The material has a Sound Transmission Class rating of 26 (1 LB), 31 (2 LB), and 21 (½ LB). Other than this, it has a tensile strength of 215 PSI for all weights. Being an EVA-based material made of recycled materials, it offers great soundproofing at lesser prices. The MLV is also UL (Fire Rating) approved for U300, U400, and U400 wall constructions. TotalMass’s product can also withstand temperatures from -40F to 180F.

Usage and Price

TotalMass MLV is easy to cut and can be trimmed into pieces with a regular box cutter or razor knife. It can be put up easily with drywall nails, drywall screws, wide crown staples, industrial adhesive or duct tape. However, if you’re planning to put it on permanently, use something whose adhesion will last.

This product is also good as it doesn’t delaminate easily and the mass is quite what it claims to be. It dampens sounds and can be used to partition rooms (with walls) with minimum sound traveling from one side to the other. The product is quite pliable and easy to apply with the proper equipment and manpower.

TotalMass MLV costs around $150-200 depending on the variant bought. But, in no way is this product a one-time temporary fix. Also, the MLV can only be used in rooms and not in cars or vehicles. It can be fixed to the floors of boats but it’s not recommended.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, TotalMass MLV is a great material that promises sound dampening and echo-reduction inside the room. It is of great quality and durability and does what is promised. However, being absolutely top-class material, it is not a quick fix and can only be used as a permanent or long-term measure.
